Cyclone Arnab: Ganjam extends closure of educational institutions till Oct 31 amid flood situation

Chhatrapur, Oct 29: In view of persistent heavy rainfall and the flood situation triggered by Cyclone Arnab, the Ganjam district administration has extended the closure of all Anganwadi centres and educational institutions across the district until October 31.

According to an order issued by the Collector and District Magistrate of Ganjam, the closure applies to Anganwadi centres, schools, degree colleges, technical institutions and university departments operating within the district.

The latest directive extends the closure announced on October 26, citing continued rainfall and flooding in several areas.

Heavy rainfall associated with Cyclone Arnab has triggered flooding across several parts of Ganjam, inundating villages, disrupting road connectivity and leaving residents stranded in waterlogged areas.

Soroda is among the worst-affected areas, with heavy to extremely heavy rainfall reported over the past three days. The rising water level of the Rushikulya River has created a flood-like situation in Soroda town and neighbouring villages.

Meanwhile, Dillip Kumar Rout, Engineer-in-Chief (EIC) of the Water Resources Department, expressed hope that the flood situation in Ganjam could improve from Thursday evening.

He said the department had not anticipated rainfall of such intensity in the district.

The situation is being closely monitored, particularly along the Rushikulya River, which has crossed the danger level at Purushottampur. Authorities remain on high alert as water levels continue to rise.

At Asika, the river is flowing at more than seven feet, nearing its danger mark of seven feet and six inches.
