New Delhi, Aug 20: The Congress party and its leaders on Wednesday paid tributes to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his 81st birth anniversary, also celebrated as ‘Sadbhavana Divas’.
Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge, Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and party General Secretary K.C. Venugopal, along with several party leaders and workers, visited Veer Bhumi in New Delhi to pay their heartfelt tributes to the former Prime Minister.
On its official ‘X’ handle, the grand old party wrote, “Heartfelt tributes to the architect of modern India, ‘Bharat Ratna’ and former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, on his birth anniversary. On this Sadbhavana Diwas, we remember Rajiv Gandhi ji’s dreams and reaffirm our commitment to his vision.”
“Rajiv ji Laid The Foundation Of A Modern, Progressive India 🇮🇳. Let's Carry On His Glorious Legacy Forward 🙏,” it added.
Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and Rajiv Gandhi’s son Rahul Gandhi paid tributes to the former Prime Minister and said fulfilling the dream, once seen by his father, is the ultimate goal of his life.
“An India where every citizen is respected, where there is harmony, and where the nation stands strong through democracy and the Constitution. Papa, fulfilling this dream you envisioned is the goal of my life,” he wrote in a post on ‘X’.
Similarly, Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge remembered Rajiv Gandhi as a remarkable leader who inspired hope in millions and played a pivotal role in ushering India into the 21st century.
“Today, as we observe Sadbhavana Diwas, we remember Rajiv Gandhi, a remarkable leader who inspired hope in millions and propelled India into the 21st century. Innumerable achievements for India exemplified Rajiv Gandhi’s legacy and brought transformative changes in the country. We pay our deepest respects to him on his birth anniversary,” he wrote in a post on ‘X’.
Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra paid tributes to the former Prime Minister and said that from him, she inherited the values of compassion, love, and patriotism.
“From you, we inherited the values of compassion, love, and patriotism. The two of us will uphold these values forever. No one will be able to break us, no one can stop us, and our steps will never falter,” she wrote in a post on ‘X’.
It is worth noting that Rajiv Gandhi became India’s Prime Minister in 1984, following the assassination of his mother, then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. At just 40 years old, he was the youngest person to hold the office in the country’s history.
He served as Prime Minister until the 1989 general elections, after which he became the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. He stepped down from the role in December 1990, just six months before he was tragically assassinated in a brutal terrorist attack.
