Chariot Construction Day 8: Wheels of chariots take shape

Puri, Ap 27: Preparations for the annual Rath Yatra are progressing steadily, with work on the chariot wheels (nahaka chaka) gaining thrust. On Sunday, the ceremonial groundwork was completed at the site, beginning with the laying of the base for the chariot wheels. The process began with the ritual breaking of the Shreephal (coconut) and the marking of the wheel positions, guided by expert artisans, with Mugur assisting.

Following the ritual, skilled craftsmen continued the construction of the three main chariots. The nahaka wheel, considered a key component, is being prepared independently. The wooden spokes of the wheel have been carefully measured and cut, approximately 3 inches in length and 1.5 inches in width for the frame. Additional wooden supports are being placed for reinforcement.

After the circular frame of the wheel was completed, 42 threads of rope were wound around it, and the base and threads were securely fastened. Once the spokes are fitted and the rim attached, the wheel will be ready for installation. Meanwhile, at Dolabedi Kamar Shala, artisans have begun work on the pandari, the inner rim of the wheel, which will provide additional strength and stability.

Arjuna Maharana, supervising the construction, explained that the pandari will be fitted inside the wheel with keys and bolts to reinforce it. Each wheel will receive two iron fittings-pandari and bala-to ensure maximum durability. These measures will prevent any damage to the wheels under the immense load during the Rath Yatra procession.

With these preparations, the chariot wheels are steadily moving toward completion, ensuring the grand festival proceeds smoothly and safely.
