Minister Krushna Chandra Patra pledges immediate relief for caterers.
Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister Krushna Chandra Patra directed the Catering Association of Odisha (CAO) to remain calm as he, promised that the state government is actively resolving the current commercial gas cylinder shortage. Following a high-level meeting with CAO representatives in Bhubaneswar, the Minister confirmed that officials will soon engage with gas agencies to restore a steady supply of fuel for the hospitality sector.
Catering Sector Facing Shutdown
Rising scarcity of essential LPG cylinders has pushed many small-scale catering units to the brink of closure. CAO President Binaya Bhusan Patnaik noted that over 100,000 families, including cooks, cleaners, and drivers, rely on this industry for their daily bread. Secretary Debi Prasad Rath informed that without immediate intervention, the sector - which manages everything from weddings to official state functions, could face a total collapse.
Odisha’s catering industry serves as a vital informal employer, often acting as a barometer for the state’s micro-economy during the peak wedding and festival seasons. Minister Patra emphasised that the administration recognises the needs of all citizens and will prioritise logistical solutions to ensure these businesses continue their operations.
Government officials intend to mediate between suppliers and the CAO to prevent further business shutdowns. This proactive stance aims to stabilise the supply chain before the upcoming cycle of social rituals and ceremonies across the state.
