Carney stresses India’s strategic role in G7 amid global security, energy talks

Ottawa, June 7: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Friday emphasized the importance of India’s participation in the upcoming G7 summit, stating that India’s role is crucial in discussions on global security, energy, digital futures, and infrastructure in emerging economies.

Speaking ahead of the summit, Carney highlighted that as the world's fifth-largest economy and its most populous country, India deserves a seat at the table.

“As G7 chair, Canada will lead key discussions on energy, security, the digital future, critical minerals, and infrastructure partnerships with emerging and developing countries,” Carney said. “India is central to many of these global supply chains, and its presence is both logical and necessary.”

He further noted that countries with significant influence in these areas must be involved in shaping solutions, and India is clearly one of them.

On the bilateral front, Carney confirmed progress in cooperation between India and Canada, particularly in law enforcement. He stated that both nations have agreed to maintain an ongoing dialogue on accountability and enforcement matters.

“I extended an invitation to Prime Minister Modi in that context, and I’m pleased that he has accepted,” Carney added.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi confirmed his attendance at the G7 leaders' summit, scheduled to be held later this month in Kananaskis, Canada.

In a post on social media platform X, Modi said: “Glad to receive a call from Prime Minister Mark J. Carney of Canada. Congratulated him on his recent election victory and thanked him for the invitation to the G7 Summit in Kananaskis later this month. As vibrant democracies bound by deep people-to-people ties, India and Canada will work together with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests. Look forward to our meeting at the Summit.”
