Bhubaneswar, Sept 9: The much-anticipated Trauma Care Center at Capital Hospital, developed under the Post Graduate Institute of Emergency Medical and Research (PGIEMER), is set to become operational soon. Designed to provide critical care services, the facility has received the final clearance from the Works Department.
Construction firm Larsen & Toubro (L&T), responsible for executing the project, has officially notified the Works Department of the project's completion. The Health Department has now initiated the procurement of essential medical equipment and recruitment of human resources required to run the center.
The Level-1 Trauma Care Center, located in front of Capital Hospital's emergency wing, began construction in 2022 after the removal of existing encroachments. Built at an estimated cost of ₹85 crore, the five-storey facility is equipped to handle high-risk emergency and trauma cases.
With a capacity of 200 beds, the center aims to significantly reduce patient pressure on the existing emergency department. The facility will house specialized units, including orthopedics, general surgery, plastic surgery, anesthesia, modular operation theatres, and various patient wards.
Once fully functional, the trauma center will provide state-of-the-art treatment for severe accidents and trauma-related cases. At present, only minor injuries are being treated at Capital Hospital, with critical patients often referred to SCB Medical College in Cuttack or AIIMS Bhubaneswar.
Additionally, construction of associated infrastructure under PGIEMER — including the administrative building, departmental blocks, and hostels — has also been completed. The agency has submitted a formal handover request to the Works Department, marking a major step toward the facility’s official inauguration.
