Veteran Indian batter Ajinkya Rahane officially ended his professional cricket career on Thursday, surprising fans by stepping away from international, domestic, and IPL matches. He shared an emotional farewell video on Instagram with the caption noting that Cap 278 was signing off. Known for his technical brilliance and calm mindset, he walks away after scoring over 8,000 international runs across 85 Tests, 90 ODIs, and 20 T20Is. Over the last decade, Indian cricket relied heavily on his ability to anchor innings in hostile overseas conditions.

Leadership and Historic Wins

During the 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, he famously led an injury-hit Indian squad to a remarkable 2-1 series victory in Australia. His brilliant century at Melbourne during that series remains one of his defining career moments. Aside from his batting talent, his reliable slip catching formed a crucial part of India's fielding strategy in red-ball cricket. He last played a Test match for India during the 2023 tour of the West Indies. His final ODI appearance happened in 2018 against England, while his last T20I match for the national squad was back in 2016.

Shock Departure from Domestic Play

Fans expected him to continue in franchise leagues, making his complete exit highly unexpected. He recently served as captain for Kolkata Knight Riders over the last two IPL seasons and remained a consistent figure for Mumbai in domestic tournaments.
