Balangir, March 30: A devastating fire broke out near the Sub-Collector’s office in Balangir, gutting at least two shops and destroying property worth lakhs. No casualties have been reported.
According to sources, the fire was detected in the early hours of Monday. Locals alerted the fire services, but by the time firefighters reached the spot, the flames had intensified and spread rapidly.
A tyre shop along with two roadside establishments, including a bicycle repair unit and a timber shop, were completely reduced to ashes. Goods stored inside the shops were extensively damaged. One of the affected outlets was reportedly engaged in the sale of country liquor.
Preliminary suspicion points towards possible arson, as the owner of one of the shops had reportedly been involved in a dispute a few days prior to the incident.
Fire service personnel managed to douse the flames after a firefighting operation. Police have also reached the spot and initiated an investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire.
Authorities said it would be clear whether the incident was accidental or deliberate only after completion of the probe.
