Bhubaneswar, June 25: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and Congress staged statewide protests on Wednesday, accusing the BJP-led Odisha government of failing to curb rising crimes against women and Dalits.
Congress leaders, including Youth Congress members, attempted to gherao CM Mohan Majhi’s residence in the state capital, Bhubaneswar, but were stopped and detained by police. They also highlighted alleged atrocities against SC/ST communities.
Simultaneously, BJD’s youth and student wings, including BYJD and BCJD, organised protests across colleges and universities, boycotting classes and burning effigies.
The agitation was sparked by recent incidents, including the gang rape of a college student in the sea beach of Gopalpur, Ganjam district.
Protests were held in multiple districts, including Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Puri, and Sambalpur.
BJD leaders, including MLAs and former ministers, joined the protests and slammed the state government for its inaction.
