Puri, July 12: Bird flu has once again been confirmed in Delanga block of Odisha’s Puri district, triggering panic among local poultry farmers. After the mysterious deaths of hundreds of chickens across several villages, laboratory tests have officially identified the H5N1 virus as the cause.
Reports of sudden poultry deaths had been pouring in from Beguniapada, Tarada, Shisuapada, Singhbrahmapur, and Badaankula over the past few days. The outbreak revived fears of a recurrence, as Delang had witnessed a similar bird flu episode just last year.
Following the alarming situation, officials from the Animal Husbandry Department collected swab samples from the affected farms. Test results confirmed the presence of avian influenza, prompting immediate containment measures.
In response, the administration has ordered the culling of all chickens within a one-kilometer radius of the infected site. Thousands of birds are expected to be culled in the coming days to prevent the spread of the disease.
A veterinary team led by the Delanga Block Veterinary Officer visited the poultry farm of Prashant Pradhan in Badaankula village, one of the hardest-hit locations. Officials assessed the situation, supervised the disposal of dead birds through burial, and advised thorough disinfection of the premises.
The outbreak has dealt a severe blow to local poultry farmers, many of whom had taken loans to establish or expand their businesses. “I invested heavily in this farm. After losing all my chickens, I am devastated,” said Pradhan.
With the financial impact mounting, farmers are demanding compensation from the state government to cover their losses and stabilize their livelihoods. Authorities are yet to announce a formal relief package.
