Bhubaneswar, Mar 18: In a major development in the much-anticipated metro rail project in Bhubaneswar, the Odisha government is set to revise the Detailed Project Report (DPR) of the project and extend the service beyond Trisulia to Cuttack.
Housing & Urban Development Minister Dr. Krushna Chandra Mahapatra announced the expansion plan and highlighted the need to make the project more viable and beneficial for the public.
Mahapatra said that the previous government had planned the metro service up to Trisulia, but a high-level technical committee has been formed to review its feasibility. The committee has already conducted a survey to determine the most effective route for the metro, ensuring maximum connectivity. A new DPR will be prepared soon to implement these changes, and the state government is fully committed to executing the metro project as planned.
Mahapatra questioned the earlier plan, stating, "What will people do after reaching Trisulia? Extending the metro to Cuttack is necessary. We are also considering other important locations for connectivity."
He further assured that the expansion would not cancel the initial project but rather enhance its scope.
The metro rail project, estimated to cost Rs 6,255 crore, is expected to be completed by 2027. The Odisha government will fully fund the project.
In the first phase, the metro will operate along a 26-kilometer route from Bhubaneswar Airport to Trisulia Square, covering 20 metro stations. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has been appointed as the consultant for the project.
Additionally, infrastructure development along the metro route is underway. The stretch from Trisulia to Nandankanan will undergo widening, requiring the removal of large trees along the roadside to facilitate smoother transportation.
