Bhubaneswar, Sept 29: A major accident took place at Sainik School Square in Bhubaneswar late Monday night after a speeding Hyva truck rammed into an electric pole in the Maitri Vihar police station area.
The impact was so intense that the electric pole was uprooted, while a boundary wall was also damaged. A vehicle parked nearby was reportedly damaged in the collision.
The Hyva became entangled in the fallen electric pole and wires, preventing it from crashing into several nearby showrooms, vehicles, a guest house and a bank. A major mishap was thus narrowly averted.
According to preliminary information, the driver claimed that the steering wheel got jammed while negotiating a turn. It is also suspected that he may have lost visibility, leading to the accident.
On being alerted, Maitri Vihar police reached the spot along with two PCR vans. The driver, who was trapped inside the damaged vehicle, was rescued after the door was forced open. He was subsequently taken to a hospital for treatment.
Following the collapse of the electric pole, TP Central Odisha Distribution Limited (TPCODL) personnel reached the spot and disconnected the power supply as a precautionary measure.
Police have seized the Hyva and detained the driver for questioning. Further investigation into the accident is underway.
