Bhubaneswar hosts vibrant two day Odisha Cartoon Academy exhibition at Jayadev Bhavan

Bhubaneswar celebrates artistic satire at local cartoon academy exhibition.

Bhubaneswar’s Jayadev Bhavan transformed into a hub of creative satire as the Odisha Cartoon Academy launched its 2026 annual exhibition. This two-day event brings together legendary sketch artists and emerging talents to showcase the evolving landscape of visual storytelling in the state.

Transport Commissioner Amitabh Thakur inaugurated the gallery, emphasizing how illustrations serve as potent tools for public awareness. Specifically, he noted that cartoons focusing on road safety translate complex regulations into relatable visual messages. This collaboration between art and administration marks a significant step for social advocacy in Odisha.

During the ceremony, the academy preserved the legacy of Odia art by presenting posthumous Lifetime Achievement Awards to the families of late cartoonists Gyana Rath and Kishore Rath. Kishore Rath’s wife and son, Debadalan Rath, accepted the honor on his behalf.

Honouring Artistic Heritage

President Kamala Kanta Rath led the felicitation session, where school students from across the state received accolades for their winning entries in recent competitions. This bridge between veterans like Paresh Nath and Keshu Das and the younger generation ensures the survival of this unique medium.

Cultural Significance in Odisha

Odisha possesses a rich history of satirical art, often used during the freedom struggle and social reform movements to bypass censorship through humor. This exhibition continues that tradition, featuring works from acclaimed artists such as Utkal Gaurav, Ashwini-Abani, and Bibek Das. The event concludes with a commitment from state officials to support formal training for budding illustrators.
