Berhampur, June 20: The Superintendent of Police (SP), Berhampur, Dr. Saravana Vivek M., has written to the Director General of Police (DGP) and Inspector General (IG) of the CID-Crime Branch, requesting that the investigation into a leopard skin smuggling case registered at Jarada Police Station in Ganjam district be transferred to the Wildlife Crime Cell of the Crime Branch.
The request follows the seizure of two leopard skins, two live bombs, and a sharp-edged weapon from two accused persons on June 6. The case involves not only wildlife crime but also the possession of explosives and weapons, making it a matter of serious concern.
Considering the complexity of the case and the need for specialized investigation, the SP has urged the authorities to hand over the probe to the Crime Branch's expert Wildlife Crime Cell. The transfer is also expected to facilitate a thorough investigation and the preparation of a strong prosecution case against the accused.
Officials believe that the involvement of organized wildlife trafficking networks and the recovery of explosives warrant a detailed probe by a specialized agency.
