Uzbekistan's President personally welcomed Prime Minister Modi in Tashkent

Prime Minister Narendra Modi touched down in Tashkent on Saturday for a crucial two-day Uzbekistan state visit focused on expanding economic and security cooperation. Breaking standard diplomatic protocol, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev personally received the Indian leader at the airport upon his arrival. Modi expressed sincere gratitude for this rare welcoming gesture. He pointed out that his fourth official trip to the Central Asian nation highlights growing and unbreakable bilateral relations.

Historical and geopolitical ties between India and Central Asia have deepened significantly over the last decade as New Delhi actively builds robust trade networks beyond traditional maritime routes. During this current trip, Modi and Mirziyoyev will lead detailed delegation-level discussions. They plan to review joint efforts across defense manufacturing, energy security, digital connectivity, foreign investment, and higher education. Both leaders also aim to align their respective national development frameworks, successfully pairing the ambitious goals of 'Viksit Bharat' with 'Yangi Uzbekistan'.

Honoring Cultural Roots and Shared History

Cultural diplomacy remains a core component of this weekend schedule. While staying in the Uzbek capital, Modi will pay his respects at the prominent Shastri Memorial. He will subsequently visit the Mahatma Gandhi Centre, strategically located within the Tashkent State University of Oriental Studies. These stops reinforce long-standing historical links and promote stronger people-to-people connections between Indian and Uzbek citizens.

Advancing Regional Stability and Economic Growth

Following his primary engagements in Uzbekistan on August 29 and 30, Modi will fly to Bishkek in the Kyrgyz Republic. He travels there at the official invitation of President Sadyr Zhaparov to participate in the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit. This particular gathering holds special historical weight, as it marks exactly 25 years since the establishment of the prominent regional block.

India plans to champion a clear developmental vision anchored directly in security, connectivity, and opportunity for all participating member states. According to his official departure statement, Modi wants to collaborate with regional partners to build a secure environment completely free from terrorism, extremism, and radical separatism. During his time in Bishkek, he will additionally attend the grand opening ceremony of the 6th World Nomad Games while conducting multiple bilateral meetings with other international leaders on the summit margins.
