​​​​​Lamtaput, Aug 26: Panic gripped Guneipada area under Lamtaput block in Koraput district after a large bear was spotted inside a school campus and nearby residential areas.

According to reports, locals first noticed the animal sleeping on the school verandah. The bear reportedly remained on the premises for nearly an hour, moving around the school kitchen and playground.

With the help of local residents, the animal was eventually driven towards the nearby forest. However, villagers claimed that the bear returned towards the habitation again in the evening after briefly retreating into the forest.

Fortunately, no one was injured and the animal has not reportedly attacked anyone. There are also reports that the bear may be a captive or pet animal, though this has not been officially confirmed.

The sighting has nevertheless triggered concern among parents and residents, particularly because the animal entered the school premises.

Villagers alleged that wild animals frequently enter the school campus due to the absence of a boundary wall, raising concerns about the safety of students.

The school headmaster said the children were safe and assured that the matter would be brought to the notice of the Forest Department and local administration in writing.

Meanwhile, the Lamtaput Forest Range Officer said a forest team had been dispatched to the spot and assured that necessary steps would be taken to resolve the issue at the earliest.
