Badrinath Temple Donation Theft: SIT Receives BKTC Report, Identifies More Suspects from CCTV

Dehradun, July 16:The investigation into the alleged embezzlement of donations at the Badrinath Temple has intensified, with the Badrinath Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC) submitting its 18-page internal inquiry report to the Uttarakhand Police's Special Investigation Team (SIT).

According to sources, the report includes findings from a review of CCTV footage recorded on June 22 and June 25, which reportedly identified several suspicious individuals. The SIT is expected to question these suspects as part of the ongoing probe.

Investigators have also seized the DVR containing CCTV footage from June 29 and July 2 for detailed forensic examination.

Earlier, BKTC Chief Executive Officer Sohan Singh Rangad confirmed that the temple committee's treasurer has been transferred following the controversy, clarifying that it was an administrative transfer and not a removal from service.

Rangad said an internal inquiry found discrepancies in the inventory of silver items kept under a double-lock system. The physical stock of silver was found to bemorethan the quantity recorded in the register, suggesting the mismatch could have resulted from a human error or incorrect entries rather than theft.

He added that if the physical stock had been less than the recorded amount, it would have raised concerns of misappropriation. Since the recovered material exceeded the register entries, the discrepancy may have resulted from overwritten or inaccurate records.

Given the sensitivity of the issue, the treasurer was transferred pending further investigation.

The BKTC CEO also dismissed allegations that donated laptops and ambulances had gone missing. He said one of the temple's three ambulances was auctioned in 2016 after being declared unserviceable, another was handed over to the Rudraprayag Chief Medical Officer, and the third remains stationed at Ukhimath.

Regarding the laptops, Rangad said an internal verification confirmed that the donated devices had been distributed among employees and were still in their possession.
