Assam: Eight killed due to floods, landslides in last 24 hours

Guwahati (Assam), June 1: As many as eight people have lost their lives due to floods and landslides in Assam in the last 24 hours, informed Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).

According to ASDMA reports, three people lost their lives in the floods, while five others died in landslides. In Golaghat district, two people, including a child, drowned in the floodwaters, and another person lost his life in Lakhimpur district due to drowning.

On the other hand, five people lost their lives and two others were injured due to landslides in the Kamrup (Metro) district.

Due to nonstop heavy rainfall in Assam and nearby states, 175 villages across 20 revenue circles in 12 districts have been affected by the first wave of floods. The affected districts are Dhemaji, South Salmara, Lakhimpur, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Darrang, Nagaon, Karbi Anglong, Kamrup, Biswanath, Tinsukia, and Karbi Anglong West.

The ASDMA flood report said that 58,091 people in 12 districts have been affected by the first wave of floods. Floodwaters have submerged 791.32 hectares of farmland.

Around 7,000 people who have been displaced by the floods are taking shelter in relief camps and distribution centers set up by the district administration. In total, 16 relief camps and centers have been set up in the affected areas to help those in need.

The floodwaters have washed away 194 animals, and a total of 75,918 animals have been affected in the flood-hit districts.

Rescue operations are underway, with teams from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF), National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF), Fire and Emergency Services, and local authorities helping in the affected areas.

In the last 24 hours, the floods have caused damage to 22 roads, one bridge, and three embankments. Four other embankments, irrigation canals, school buildings, and Anganwadi centers have also been damaged.

Meanwhile, 9,865 people were affected by urban floods in Kamrup, Dibrugarh, Darrang, Cachar, and Kamrup (M) districts.
