Assam Chief Minister Swearing-In Expected on May 12: Sources

Guwahati, May 6:  The oath-taking ceremony for Assam’s next Chief Minister is expected to take place on May 12, according to sources from the state BJP.

BJP leader Dilip Saikia informed that the party’s central observers, Union Minister JP Nadda and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, are scheduled to arrive in Guwahati on May 9 to supervise the election of the Leader of the BJP Legislative Party in Assam.

“On May 10, the BJP Legislature Party will hold its meeting in Guwahati, followed by an NDA meeting, where the central observers will also be present,” Saikia said.

Earlier today, Assam’s caretaker Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma submitted his resignation, paving the way for the formation of a new cabinet after the party’s emphatic electoral victory. Sarma confirmed that BJP National President Nitin Nabin has appointed JP Nadda and Nayab Singh Saini as central observers to oversee the selection process for the next Chief Minister.

Speaking to reporters, Sarma said, “Shri JP Nadda and Nayab Singh Saini have been appointed as central observers by BJP National President Nitin Nabin. The next Chief Minister will be chosen by the legislative party. After the legislative party meeting, we will return to Lok Bhawan to stake a claim for forming the government. The oath-taking is likely after May 11, as we have invited the Prime Minister to grace the ceremony. This invitation is in recognition of our hat-trick victory with a significant majority this time.”

Sarma formally handed over his resignation to Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya following the BJP’s decisive win in the Assam elections. This move concludes the term of the current assembly and sets the stage for the formation of the third consecutive BJP government in the state.

Addressing the media outside Lok Bhavan, Sarma added that the Governor has requested him to continue overseeing the state’s affairs until the new government is officially formed.
