New Delhi, May 19: In a significant step towards creating a digitally-driven governance system, particularly for Indians living abroad, Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah today inaugurated a revamped Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) portal in New Delhi.
The launch is a major step in the government’s efforts to improve services for the Indian diaspora and enhance the digital experience for OCI cardholders.
According to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the new portal was created to keep up with technological advancements in the last decade and to address issues raised by current OCI cardholders with the old system.
"Union Home Minister Amit Shah today launched the new Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) portal in New Delhi. In light of significant technological advancements over the past decade and feedback received from OCI cardholders, a new OCI portal has been developed to address existing shortcomings and enhance the user experience," said the MHA in a statement.
Officials said the updated platform fixes the problems of the old system and is designed to provide a more user-friendly, efficient, and smooth experience for Indians living abroad.
It is worth mentioning that the OCI card is given to people of Indian origin who have become citizens of other countries. It allows them to travel to India without a visa for life and provides certain economic and educational benefits.
As the number of OCI holders has increased worldwide, there has been a growing demand for better digital services and more efficient systems.
