New Delhi, July 22: An Air India flight arriving from Hong Kong encountered a fire in its auxiliary power unit (APU) shortly after landing at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport on Tuesday. All passengers and crew are safe, officials confirmed.
Flight AI 315 had completed its journey and was parked at the gate when the APU— a small engine at the tail of the aircraft used to power essential systems when the main engines are off — caught fire. The incident occurred as passengers had begun to disembark.
“The APU was automatically shut down as per system design,” an Air India spokesperson said. “There was some damage to the aircraft, but all passengers and crew disembarked safely.”
The aircraft has been grounded for technical evaluation, and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has been notified. No injuries were reported. Further investigations are underway.
