This cutting-edge initiative aims to enhance surveillance and deter criminal activity, with a special focus on safeguarding women and children. The facial recognition technology is integrated with the National Database on Sexual Offenders (NDSO), enabling authorities to identify individuals with criminal records particularly those involved in serious offences like sexual assault in real time.

A successful pilot run of the technology at Bengaluru station provided promising results. Over a span of 90 days, the system identified 47 wanted individuals with an accuracy rate exceeding 95%, demonstrating its potential for nationwide implementation.

The AI system forms part of a broader security upgrade under the Nirbhaya Fund, which has also financed the installation of IP-based CCTV cameras and centralised monitoring infrastructure. The revamped surveillance network includes real-time analytics and a unified command control system, enhancing both proactive crime prevention and rapid response during emergencies.

According to railway officials, this intelligent surveillance network will significantly improve investigative efficiency, ensure better monitoring, and promote a safer travel environment for millions of daily commuters.

With this move, Indian Railways is ushering in a new era of technology-driven safety and surveillance, reaffirming its commitment to modernising public transport infrastructure and protecting passengers across the nation.
