Cuttack, Sept 9: Some teachers leave behind lessons written on blackboards. Others leave behind lessons that remain etched in the hearts of generations.
Pratap Kumar Rout, a 47-year-old senior Arts teacher from Dhansar village under Banki sub-division of Cuttack district, has left behind one such unforgettable lesson-the lesson of giving, even in death.
Pratap passed away after suffering a brain stroke, but his final act of kindness has given three other people a chance to live and see the world anew. His liver and both eyes were donated, making his death a story of hope amid immense grief.

His Final Journey Began on Teachers’ Day
The tragedy unfolded on Teachers’ Day, when Pratap returned home after attending school. Soon after, he suffered a brain stroke.
His family rushed him to a hospital in Banki and later shifted him to AIIMS Bhubaneswar for further treatment. As his condition became critical, he was brought to SUM Ultimate Medicare, Bhubaneswar, where doctors treated him for three days.
Despite every effort, Pratap breathed his last.
For his family, it was an unbearable loss. But in the midst of their grief, a decision was made that would transform the tragedy into hope-the decision to donate his organs.
His liver and both eyes were donated, giving three people a precious second chance at life.
A Teacher Who Was More Than a Teacher
Pratap served as a senior Arts teacher at Kumarabasta High School in Khordha district. To his students, however, he was much more than someone who stood in front of a classroom.
He was remembered as a student-loving and compassionate teacher, someone who cared for his students and remained close to them.
His sudden death has left his family, colleagues, students and villagers devastated.
Pratap is survived by his wife and two sons. His last rites will be performed at his ancestral village, according to his family.
Social worker Surendra Panda said the village would deeply miss Pratap and his presence.
As a mark of respect for his service and noble final gesture, a guard of honour will be accorded to him at SUM Ultimate Medicare Hospital.

A Legacy That Will Keep Living
Pratap Kumar Rout may have taken his final breath, but his story does not end there.
His students will remember the teacher who guided them. His family will remember the man they loved. And somewhere, three families will remember an unknown donor whose final act gave their loved ones another chance.
He taught through words during his lifetime. In death, he taught an even greater lesson—life becomes truly meaningful when we help others live.
