Bhubaneswar, April 25: This Friday, Odisha’s silver screens are set for a cinematic double delight as two very different yet highly anticipated Odia films—‘1999 – Eka Sangupta Kahani’ and ‘Racket’—prepare for their theatrical release. While 1999 is gearing up for a focused release across 10 theatres in the state, Racket is set to reach a broader audience with a 45-theatre rollout, promising a weekend of storytelling steeped in contrast, creativity, and commitment.
Both films will host grand premiere shows in Bhubaneswar—one in a multiplex and the other in a single-screen theatre. The entire cast and crew from each film will be present to watch alongside the audience, creating a rare moment of shared celebration between artists and moviegoers. The production teams behind these projects have jointly appealed to the public to come out in support of Odia cinema, not just by watching the films, but by being part of a growing cultural movement that celebrates local stories and talent.
1999 – A layered journey through time and trauma
Produced under the Guptaganga Creations banner, 1999 – Eka Sangupta Kahani is more than just a film—it's a deeply personal creative venture by Dr. Manoj Mishra, a man of many dimensions: orthopedic doctor, writer, lyricist, social worker, and actor. Not only has he bankrolled the film, but he’s also penned the story, dialogues, and songs—and steps into the lead role himself.
Set in the coastal village of Rajganagar, the film draws its roots from the devastating 1999 Super Cyclone but evolves into something far richer—a narrative layered with emotion, internal conflict, and moral tension. The film attempts to break away from the formulaic, offering Odia audiences a more introspective and emotionally nuanced experience.
Directed by Amir Pati, who also helms the screenplay and choreography, the film’s musical score is composed by Prashant Padhi, with haunting vocals by Shreecharan and Anantara Chakraborty. A stellar ensemble cast supports Dr. Mishra, including Manorama Mishra, Apurva, Debu Brahma, Kalicharan Acharya, Mamta Padhi, Narendra Senapati, and many more.
Racket – A contemporary thriller with heart and rhythm
On the other side of the thematic spectrum is ‘Racket’, a slick, emotionally charged drama presented by Shree Motion Pictures. Produced by Shrilekha Panda and directed by Sangram Mohanty, the film promises suspense and sentiment in equal measure. Hemanta Patra pens the story, while Bijay Mall takes on the task of crafting the dialogues.
Cinematographer R. Bhagat Singh and editor Sukumar Mani bring a sharp visual style to the project, complemented by a vibrant music score from Prem Anand. The soundtrack features lyrics by Bijay Mall, Arun Mantri, and Basantaraj Samal, brought to life by some of Odisha’s most beloved playback voices—Human Sagar, Deeptirekha Padhi, Shibasish Mishra, Ananya Shritam Nanda, and others.
Adding a layer of dance and visual flair, the film also marks the return of veteran choreographer S.K. Muralidharan. In the lead is the elegant and expressive Namrata Thapa, supported by a dynamic cast that includes Dushmant Panda, Pruthviraj Nayak, Arlene Ankita, Disco Reddy, and rising talents like child artists Sheetul and Babul. Special guest appearance by Ankita Das in a standout song adds star value and excitement.
A big weekend for Odia cinema
As 1999 and Racket head into theatres, they represent more than just weekend releases—they symbolize a new wave of confidence and creativity in Odia cinema. One rooted in introspection and real events, the other pulsing with contemporary energy and suspense.
Whether you're drawn to the emotional weight of a post-cyclone tale or the pulse of a modern thriller, this Friday is your chance to support the vibrant tapestry of stories Odia filmmakers are bringing to life.
