16 Gates of Hirakud dam opened amid rising water levels

Bhubaneswar, September 4: Due to the continuous influx of floodwater from the upper catchment area of the Mahanadi River, authorities at Hirakud Dam have opened two additional gates this afternoon to regulate the rising water levels.

As per Hirakud Dam officials, the water level in the reservoir is steadily increasing due to persistent rainfall caused by a low-pressure system. To manage the inflow, the dam gates are being opened gradually. Currently, 16 gates are operational, up from the previous 14, with more gates set to open if the situation demands further regulation.

The discharge of excess water has raised concerns about potential flooding in areas downstream of the Mahanadi River. Water Resource Department authorities have issued warnings, especially for those living near riverbanks, urging them to stay vigilant, avoid riverfront areas, and take necessary precautions to protect both lives and property.

The situation is being closely monitored, with decisions on further gate openings depending on rainfall patterns and the rate of water inflow into the reservoir.
