Bhubaneswar, March 13: Odisha has witnessed a surge in the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in recent years, with a total of 1,55,068 EVs registered in the state over the past five years, according to data shared in the Odisha Assembly on Thursday.
In response to a query by Bijaya Kumar Dalabehera, the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from IND Baramba, Bibhuti Bhusan Jena, the state's Commerce and Transport Minister, disclosed the figures in a written statement. The Minister emphasized that the surge in registrations spans various categories of electric vehicles, including two-wheelers, three-wheelers, cars, and buses, reflecting a growing shift toward eco-friendly transportation. This rise in registrations comes in the wake of the implementation of the state government's Electric Vehicle Rules, which were introduced in 2021.
Minister Jena highlighted the financial incentives provided by the government to encourage EV adoption. As of March 6, 2025, the state government has disbursed a total subsidy of Rs 232.45 crore to 1,22,578 beneficiaries. This subsidy initiative is a part of the state’s broader efforts to incentivize electric vehicle purchases by individuals and businesses alike. These financial incentives aim to reduce the initial costs of EVs, making them more accessible to a larger segment of the population and further promoting the state’s green mobility goals.
