Kolkata, July 21: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has launched a scathing attack on the BJP and the Election Commission, accusing them of orchestrating a plan to systematically remove legitimate voters—particularly from minority and migrant communities—from the state’s electoral rolls ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
Addressing a massive gathering at the Trinamool Congress’ annual Martyrs’ Day rally at Esplanade, Banerjee asserted that the upcoming electoral battle would begin not at the ballot box, but with the integrity of the voter list itself. She warned party workers of what she described as a “silent purge” targeting Bengali-speaking voters and urged them to be on high alert.
“They have the power to delete names from the voter list right up to the day of nomination,” Banerjee said, holding up a sheaf of documents. “I am telling our organisation—don’t allow even a single name to be struck off unjustly.”
She framed the issue as a critical front in the party’s fight to safeguard democracy in the state, calling on grassroots workers to monitor the revision of electoral rolls closely and respond to any irregularities.
