DR Congo secures historic World Cup knockout stage spot
DR Congo earned their first ever FIFA World Cup match victory by defeating Uzbekistan 3-1 in Atlanta. This dramatic result directly secures their advancement to the knockout rounds of the 2026 tournament. Early in the game, Uzbekistan took a 10th-minute lead when striker Eldor Shomurodov brilliantly capitalized on a rare defensive mistake between Aaron Wan-Bissaka and the goalkeeper.
Having previously competed on this global stage only once as Zaire in 1974, the African nation refused to surrender. They pushed hard and finally broke through when Yoane Wissa equalized from the penalty spot near the sixty-minute mark. Fiston Mayele later guided the ball into the net in the 78th minute, giving his team a well-deserved lead. Moments before the final whistle, Wissa fired a clinical strike to complete his brace and seal the famous win.
Uzbekistan officially exits the competition despite gaining valuable global experience during their maiden tournament. Meanwhile, DR Congo quickly shifts focus toward an exciting Round of 32 clash against England.
