Jhārapokhariā, Ap 17: A powerful bomb dating back to World War II was recovered from the Subarnarekha River near Panipoda village in the Baharagoda block of East Singhbhum district, Jharkhand, on Wednesday night. The discovery has caused widespread concern among local residents, marking the third such incident in the area within the past month.
According to reports, around 9:30 pm., villagers fishing in the river found a heavy metallic object caught in their nets. Upon inspection, it was identified as a World War II-era bomb, similar to one recovered in the same area a few days earlier. Locals promptly informed authorities. Earlier, on March 25, two other bombs recovered from the region were safely deactivated by the Indian Army and bomb disposal teams.
Authorities have cordoned off the site and alerted the bomb squad and military personnel. The repeated discoveries have raised fears of additional unexploded ordnance in the river basin. Historical records indicate that the British Army maintained active airfields in Baharagoda and Chakulia during World War II, and some explosives from that era are believed to remain in the area. Residents have been advised to avoid approaching the device while authorities plan a controlled neutralization operation.
