Bhubaneswar, Feb 26: Padma Shri awardee Pramod Bhagat scored a remarkable victory over England's Daniel Bethell in the SL3 category, maintaining his reign with a gold medal today at the BWF Para-Badminton World Championships 2024 in Thailand.
This triumph marks a significant milestone for Pramod, as he becomes the first para-athlete to clinch three consecutive gold medals at the BWF Para-Badminton World Championships, a feat that also equals the legendary Lin Dan's five World Championships. Pramod has consistently triumphed in 2009, 2015, 2019, 2022, and now 2024.
The intense rivalry between Pramod and Daniel Bethell was evident in this match, which unfolded over a gripping 1 hour and 40 minutes. Pramod seized an early lead with five consecutive points, yet Bethell rallied back strongly to claim the first set 21-14.
The second set commenced with equal aggression, evolving into a battle of endurance and defensive prowess as both athletes engaged in protracted rallies. Pramod managed to capitalize on errors from Bethell's end, clinching the set 21-15.
With the match finely poised, the decisive set held immense importance. Pramod strategically altered his approach, perplexing Bethell and ultimately securing a 21-14 victory, thus claiming his third consecutive world championship title.
In addition to the gold medal, Pramod also distinguished himself by winning bronze in the Men's Doubles category alongside Sukant Kadam, as well as another bronze in Mixed Doubles with Manish Ramdass.
Reflecting on his achievement, Pramod expressed profound gratitude, stating, "This victory is profoundly meaningful to me on multiple levels. Firstly, it allows me to equal my idol Lin Dan's unparalleled record of five world championships. Secondly, it signifies my ability to retain three consecutive world championships."
He went on to acknowledge the arduous nature of his contest against Bethell, emphasizing the mental and physical challenges he faced. "This match against Bethell was undoubtedly my toughest yet, both mentally and physically. Despite recent setbacks against him, I was determined to silence the skeptics. It was an exhaustive battle, and Bethell displayed exceptional skill, but I'm grateful to have emerged victorious," Pramod concluded.
