Bhubaneswar, May 16: The dengue situation in Odisha remains under control even as malaria cases continue to rise across the state. While nearly 60,000 malaria patients are being reported annually, dengue cases have shown a steady decline in 2025 compared to the previous year.
According to Health Department data, the dengue Test Positivity Rate (TPR) has dropped significantly from 5.61 percent in 2024 to 1.83 percent in 2025-26. Over the last five years, 40,478 dengue cases have been detected in the state, with only one death reported during the period.
Khordha, Balasore, Cuttack and Mayurbhanj districts continue to remain the most dengue-prone areas in Odisha. By the end of 2025, Khordha accounted for 18 percent of the total cases, followed by Balasore at 11 percent, while Cuttack and Mayurbhanj recorded 7 percent each. In view of the rising vulnerability, testing and awareness activities have been intensified in these districts.
The capital city Bhubaneswar has reported around 5,800 dengue cases over the past three years. In 2023 alone, the number of patients crossed 4,000, with 4,254 cases detected. However, the figure came down to 1,225 in 2024 and further dropped sharply to just 327 cases in 2025-26.
Health officials said dengue cases generally rise during the post-monsoon months of July, August, September and October. Areas such as Patia, Sikharchandi, Chandrasekharpur and Nayapalli in Bhubaneswar have emerged as major hotspots.
To curb the spread of dengue, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Urban Health Department have intensified preventive measures across the capital. Dry day observance, door-to-door inspections, fogging drives, sanitation campaigns and awareness programmes in schools and colleges are being carried out regularly.
Meanwhile, All India Institute of Medical Sciences Bhubaneswar and Regional Medical Research Centre Bhubaneswar have been strengthened as apex referral laboratories for dengue testing. Laboratory technicians are also being trained to enhance testing and diagnostic capabilities.
