Bhubaneswar, June 23: In a poignant act of love and humanity, Sailabala Sahu, the wife of late Debendra Sahu, donated her husband's eyes after his demise, honoring his long-cherished final wish.
Debendra Sahu, aged 69 and fondly known as Bipa, was a native of Sarat village under Balipatna police limits. He had retired in 2019 after serving for several decades at the Belpahar Electricity Department's main office in Jharsuguda district. Following his retirement, he had been residing with his family near Uttara Chhak in Bhubaneswar.
On Thursday morning, Debendra suddenly fell ill and was rushed to a private hospital in the city. As his condition deteriorated, he was shifted to Capital Hospital, where doctors declared him dead after a thorough examination.
Despite the emotional toll, Sailabala remained resolute and reached out to medical officials to facilitate the eye donation, in accordance with her husband’s expressed wish. A team of specialist doctors successfully retrieved both eyes, ensuring the gift of vision to those in need.
The noble act has been widely appreciated, highlighting the growing awareness and importance of organ donation in the state.
