Baripada, Aug 02: In a tragic incident, a 26-year-old woman died and her male companion sustained burn injuries after they self-immolated themselves at an agricultural field in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district on Saturday, police said.
Bharati Patra from Khiching village died by self-immolation. Her companion, Harishankar Acharya, a 38-year-old man from Rairangpur, sustained severe burn injuries in the same incident.
According to police, the incident took place around 8.30 am at Khiching village.
The two individuals allegedly poured petrol on themselves and set it alight.
Both Patra and Acharya were immediately taken to the Sukrili community health center. Sadly, Patra was pronounced dead upon arrival. Acharya, who is in a critical condition, was transferred to Keonjhar District Headquarters Hospital for further treatment.
The motive behind the suicide attempt remains under investigation, according to Anadi Charan Patayat, the Rairang police station in-charge.
