Cold wave intensifies with dense fog engulfing interior districts
Winter has firmly arrived in Odisha, bringing a sharp drop in night temperatures across the state. According to the latest data released by the Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, for November 27, 2025, several districts are experiencing a significant chill, with the mercury dipping well below the 10-degree mark in multiple locations.
The Coldest Spots
The chill is most severe in the interior regions. G. Udayagiri continues to hold the title for the coldest location in the state, recording a shivering lowest minimum temperature of 7.4°C among hill stations. In the plains, the steel city of Rourkela wasn't far behind, recording the lowest minimum temperature of 7.7°C.
Other areas are also feeling the bite of winter. The data highlights that Kirei dropped to a chilly 9.3°C, while Daringbadi, often called the Kashmir of Odisha, recorded a minimum of 9.5°C. Jharsuguda and Sundergarh also reported cold nights, registering 8.1°C and 10.6°C respectively. Interestingly, Jharsuguda’s temperature reflects a massive departure, staying 6.2 degrees below the normal average for this time of year.
Fog Alerts and Visibility
While dry weather prevails across most districts, winter fog has started disrupting visibility in specific pockets. The IMD report highlights that Dense Fog occurred in Phulbani and Sonepur, where visibility dropped to between 50 and 200 meters. Commuters in Bhawanipatna faced Moderate Fog, while Gopalpur experienced Shallow Fog conditions.
Twin Cities Weather Check
Residents in the coastal belt, particularly in the Twin Cities, are experiencing pleasant days but noticeably cooler nights. The capital city, Bhubaneswar, recorded a maximum temperature of 28.7°C and a minimum of 13.5°C. Similarly, Cuttack saw a high of 26.0°C with the night temperature settling at 13.4°C. Both cities remain free of rainfall and significant fog for now.
Warmest Regions
Despite the overall drop in temperature, southern Odisha remains relatively warmer during the day. Malkangiri recorded the highest maximum temperature in the state at 32.2°C, offering a stark contrast to the freezing temperatures in the northern and interior hills.
As the week progresses, residents in the interior districts are advised to stay warm, particularly during the early morning hours when fog and cold conditions are at their peak.
