Bhubaneswar, December 23: In a disturbing incident, 18 school-level wrestlers from Odisha faced a humiliating train journey to and from the 69th National School Wrestling Championship in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh. Viral videos showed the young athletes, including 10 boys and 8 girls, sitting near train toilets in unhygienic and freezing conditions, sparking outrage across the country as well as the state.

The contingent, accompanied by four teachers, traveled from Bhubaneswar on December 5 and returned on December 14. Only a few had confirmed tickets, while most were forced into overcrowded general compartments. Many athletes, including minors, endured sitting near toilets, exposed to cold, foul odors, and constant foot traffic.

An official from the concerned department acknowledged the mismanagement, said that only four players had berths. Parents expressed anger over their children's suffering, calling it an embarrassment. The incident led to strong reactions on social media and from opposition leaders.

In response, the School and Mass Education Department ordered an inquiry, and Minister Nityananda Gond promised that strict action would be taken if lapses were found. The government also pledged to work with Indian Railways to ensure confirmed tickets and proper travel arrangements for student athletes in the future.
