Neeraj Ghaywan’s film moves one step closer to Oscar glory.

It is a moment of immense pride for the Indian film fraternity. The country's official entry for the 98th Academy Awards, Homebound, has successfully cleared the first major hurdle. Directed by the acclaimed Neeraj Ghaywan and produced by Dharma Productions, the movie has secured a coveted spot in the shortlist for the Best International Feature Film category.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released the shortlists for 12 different categories this Tuesday. Out of numerous entries from across the globe, Homebound has been selected as one of the top 15 contenders. The competition is fierce, with the Indian drama standing alongside strong international entries from countries like Argentina, France, Japan, and South Korea. The final five nominations will be revealed on January 22, which will determine if the film heads to the main ceremony.

A Story of Friendship and Struggle

For those who haven’t seen it yet, Homebound is currently available for streaming on Netflix. The narrative is a gripping emotional drama centered on two childhood friends, Shoaib and Chandan, portrayed by Ishaan Khatter and Vishal Jethwa. The duo shares a dream of joining the police force, but the plot delves deep into the systemic oppression, class divides, and economic hardships that stand in their way. The film also features Janhvi Kapoor in a pivotal role.

Reactions from the Team

The team behind the film is understandably ecstatic. Producer Karan Johar took to Instagram to express his gratitude, stating that he was "over the moon" and struggled to find words to describe his pride. He thanked the global audience for their support and credited Neeraj Ghaywan for turning their dreams into reality.

Director Neeraj Ghaywan also shared the official poster, thanking fans for the love the film has received worldwide. With legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese serving as one of the executive producers, Homebound has already made waves at the Cannes Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival. Now, all eyes are on the final nomination announcement.
