Eminent Konark scholar Anil Dey leaves behind unfinished dreams

Renowned historian and researcher Anil Dey breathed his last today, leaving behind an unfulfilled dream of constructing a modern Global Sun Temple. He spent his life meticulously studying the architectural brilliance of the original Konark Sun Temple. His passing marks a deeply felt loss for cultural preservation efforts in Odisha. Historical records show that the region has not constructed a monument of global significance in nearly eight centuries, making his vision uniquely bold.

Blueprint for Tomorrow

Dey strongly desired to build a new world-class shrine. He collaborated with expert engineers to prepare a detailed blueprint and exact financial estimate for this proposed structure. He presented these plans to both past and present government leaders through detailed presentations. Authorities offered promises, yet they took no practical steps to start the work. Frustrated by the delay, he finally appealed to ordinary citizens to fund the project through public donations.

Scholarly Reach beyond Odisha

His deep research produced a highly respected book titled 'Arka Kshetra Konark'. Readers responded well, leading to several new editions over the years. Translators also brought his work into English and Bengali. Recognising its academic value, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras included the text in its official curriculum. Last year, he received a prestigious award celebrating his outstanding contribution to Odia identity.

His physical absence certainly slows down the momentum for the new monument. However, the exact designs and technical drawings he left behind are completely intact. Future generations can still use these documents to build the Global Sun Temple. Such an achievement would finally give the world a fresh symbol of Odia heritage and answer his final lingering question about our commitment to preserving our history.
