Vikram Doraiswami Receives Credentials From President Murmu To Lead China Mission

President Murmu hands credentials to Vikram Doraiswami as envoy to China

Vikram Doraiswami formally received his letter of credence from President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday, marking his official transition as India’s next Ambassador to the People's Republic of China. This high-profile handover at Rashtrapati Bhavan sets the stage for one of the most demanding diplomatic assignments in the Indian Foreign Service.

Doraiswami, a seasoned 1992-batch officer, brings a wealth of experience from his previous tenure as High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. His appointment comes at a time when New Delhi and Beijing are navigating a strained relationship characterised by long-standing border friction and competing regional interests.

Following the ceremony with the President, the Ambassador-designate met with Chief of the Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi. Their discussion centered on critical geoststrategic issues and existing engagement frameworks. This meeting highlights the deep integration between India’s diplomatic outreach and its national security priorities, especially regarding the Line of Actual Control.

Background of Expert Diplomacy

Fluency in the Chinese language provides Doraiswami with a distinct advantage in direct negotiations. He previously served in Beijing during the late 1990s and has held vital roles in the Prime Minister’s Office under two different administrations. His deep understanding of the neighborhood was further refined during his successful term in Bangladesh, where he managed complex cross-border cooperation.

Historically, India-China relations have fluctuated between economic collaboration and territorial disputes, with the 2020 Galwan Valley clash remaining a defining moment in recent memory. By selecting a diplomat with specialized linguistic and regional expertise, India signals a commitment to nuanced, firm engagement with its largest neighbor.

Doraiswami succeeds Pradeep Kumar Rawat in Beijing. His primary focus will likely involve maintaining communication channels to prevent escalation while protecting India's sovereign interests in the Indo-Pacific.
