Vaishno Devi Yatra Halted by Tragedy
The pilgrimage to the Vaishno Devi shrine remains suspended for the fourth consecutive day following a devastating landslide that has claimed 34 lives and injured 20 others. Continuous heavy rainfall in the region has prevented the resumption of the Yatra, leaving thousands of pilgrims stranded in Katra.
Details of the Incident
The tragedy occurred on Tuesday, August 26, when a cloudburst triggered a massive landslide on the pilgrim route near Adhkuwari on the Trikuta hills. The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB), which manages the pilgrimage, has stated that it suspended the Yatra at noon that day, prior to the landslide, based on weather advisories. However, the route was struck by the disaster, leading to significant loss of life.
Current Situation and Response
Rescue operations are now nearly complete, with the focus shifting to clearing the extensive debris from the pilgrimage track. Officials have confirmed the route has been cleared, but the Yatra remains suspended due to the persistent inclement weather, which poses an ongoing risk to pilgrim safety.
Meanwhile, stranded devotees are urging the Shrine Board to implement stronger safety measures to prevent future tragedies. In a gesture of support, the local hotel association in Katra has offered free accommodation to all pilgrims waiting for the Yatra to resume. The families of those receiving medical treatment have been provided rooms at the Narayana Hospital. The community has come together to mourn the victims, holding a candle march in Katra to pay tribute to the deceased.
