Utkal University Jaundice scare: Over 50 students' blood samples sent for testing

Bhubaneswar, Nov 4: Panic has gripped Utkal University following the detection of jaundice in two female students, who are currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital. The university authorities have stepped up health surveillance across the campus, while blood, food and water samples have been collected for laboratory testing to identify the possible source of infection.

More than 50 students' blood samples were collected on Tuesday and sent for testing. Health teams are also examining students showing symptoms of illness, while daily health check-ups are being conducted in hostels.

The development comes after more than 20 students reportedly complained of illness on Monday. Two students from Girls' Hostel No. 7 were subsequently diagnosed with jaundice and admitted to a private hospital. Their health condition has reportedly improved.

Teams from the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) Public Health Department have collected blood samples from students staying in Hostels 6 and 7. On Tuesday, samples were also collected from students across other hostels who reported symptoms or felt unwell.

Food samples from hostel messes and canteens, along with drinking water samples, have been sent to laboratories for examination. University officials said the reports are expected within 48 hours and may help establish the possible source of the infection.

As a precautionary measure, food stalls operating inside the campus have been temporarily closed, while the hostel food menu has been revised. Authorities said hygienic food items such as santula would be served to students. The entry of outside food into hostels has also been restricted.

The university has installed water boilers in all hostels to facilitate access to boiled drinking water. Around 1,500 litres of purified drinking water have also been supplied to each hostel. Students are being advised to follow hygiene guidelines and report any symptoms immediately.

A 24-hour control room has been opened to monitor the situation. The university health centre is conducting medical check-ups, while medicines are being provided through the dispensary. The administration is also coordinating with AIIMS Bhubaneswar for medical guidance.

Meanwhile, several students are reportedly leaving their hostels amid concerns over the outbreak. Students have also raised questions about the maintenance of campus water tanks and alleged that some pipelines are damaged, with reports of insects in the water. These allegations are yet to be independently verified.

The university administration said it is taking preventive measures in coordination with health authorities to contain the situation and prevent further cases.

The mid-semester examinations have also been postponed indefinitely. A fresh schedule will be announced through a subsequent notification.
