Eco-friendly boat signals a new era for Indian waterways.
In a historic stride toward decarbonizing the nation's transport sector, the Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, inaugurated the commercial operations ofIndia’s first hydrogen fuel cell vesselon Thursday. The launch took place at the famous Namo Ghat in Varanasi, marking a pivotal moment in the "Green Voyage" initiative.
This launch is not just a technological breakthrough but a testament to indigenous engineering. The vessel stands as a pioneering example of the "Make in India" campaign, showcasing technology completely developed within the country.
The vessel distinguishes itself by utilizing a sophisticated Low-Temperature Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell system. Unlike traditional diesel engines that emit harmful fumes, this system generates electricity by chemically converting stored hydrogen. The result is a propulsion system that is silent, efficient, and releases nothing but pure water as a byproduct.
Constructed by the renowned Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) for the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), this urban transit boat is designed for both comfort and efficiency.
The vessel has undergone rigorous testing and holds certification from the Indian Register of Shipping, ensuring it meets the highest safety standards.
The introduction of this vessel is expected to transform local tourism in Varanasi. Pilgrims and tourists can now enjoy a noise-free journey along the river, free from the smell of diesel smoke. This initiative supports the government's ambitious target of reaching net-zero emissions by 2070.
To ensure smooth operations, a tripartite agreement has been signed between IWAI, Cochin Shipyard, and Inland and Coastal Shipping Ltd. to oversee maintenance, safety monitoring, and technical support during the pilot phase. The maiden journey, a 5-kilometer run from Namo Ghat to Lalita Ghat, successfully carried a delegation of ministers and officials, signaling that the future of green inland water transport has officially arrived.
