Ather Konarc EV debuts with affordable metal body design
Electric vehicle manufacturer Ather Energy will introduce its most budget-friendly scooter, named Konarc, later this month. Chief Executive Officer Tarun Mehta confirmed through a recent promotional video that this upcoming two-wheeler features exterior metal panels, marking a major departure from previous production designs. Company representatives plan to present the final vehicle during a community event on August 29, where they will share battery options, exact range numbers, and delivery timelines.
Focus Shifts to Practical Durability
India's electric two-wheeler sector currently demonstrates a clear shift toward practical commuter models as consumers prioritize long-lasting build quality over pure high-speed performance. Moving to metal bodywork allows the brand to attract traditional buyers who expect the sturdiness commonly associated with conventional family scooters.
Engineers built this scooter on the newly developed EL architecture. Mehta noted that this fresh foundation prioritises everyday convenience, lower maintenance expenses, and general ownership comfort based on nearly ten years of industry experience. This hardware base specifically targets mass-market buyers rather than just early technology adopters.
Design elements showcase a more family-oriented approach compared to the sportier 450 range. Riders will get a spacious floorboard, an upright seating posture, and a long single-piece seat. The front end displays a distinct horizontal LED daytime running light with illuminated branding above it. A headlamp sits mounted directly on the handlebar. Hardware specifications include a 14-inch front wheel paired with a 12-inch rear wheel, slim LED tail lamps integrated into the rear bodywork, and an expected front disc brake setup.
Pricing Strategy and Competitors
Market experts expect pricing to range between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 1.25 lakh. This positions the upcoming model as a highly accessible option below the Rizta, which currently begins at Rs 1.21 lakh, and the standard 450 series starting at Rs 1.28 lakh. Final showroom costs will become public during the official launch event. Once it hits the streets, this sturdy offering will join the Bajaj Chetak as one of the few mainstream electric options utilizing metal panels. It aims to compete directly against lower-end variants of the TVS iQube, Ola S1 X, and the Chetak in a bid to secure higher sales volumes across local markets.
