Umerkote, Aug. 17: An American tourist has praised Odisha's free public healthcare system after receiving treatment at a government hospital in Nabarangpur district, saying similar medical care in the United States would have cost him thousands of dollars.
The 28-year-old visitor, identified as Mike, shared his experience through a video message after recovering from a sudden illness during his stay in Umerkote. His remarks have drawn attention to Odisha's healthcare services and the warmth shown by local residents.
Mike had been staying with the family of Mamta Sarkar in the Jamuranda area for about a week. During his visit, he explored the village, interacted with locals and experienced rural life in Odisha.
However, on the morning of August 17, he developed severe gastric discomfort, including chest burning, vomiting and dehydration. Concerned family members immediately rushed him to a nearby government health centre.
Doctors examined him, administered injections and medicines, and kept him under observation until his condition improved. According to Mike, the treatment was provided completely free of cost.
In his video message, the American tourist said he was surprised that he did not have to pay anything for his treatment. He added that the same medical care in the United States could have cost him thousands of dollars.
Beyond the medical care, Mike also praised the hospitality extended by the local family and villagers during his illness. He described the kindness and support he received as one of the most memorable parts of his visit to Odisha.
After returning home, he shared his experience on social media, where he highlighted the accessibility of free healthcare in rural Odisha and thanked the doctors, healthcare workers and the family that cared for him.
His experience has sparked discussion online, with many seeing it as a reflection of Odisha's tradition of "Atithi Devo Bhava"—the belief that guests are treated with the highest respect—along with the reach of the state's government healthcare services in rural areas.
