Angul, Aug 22: An undertrial prisoner from Angul Jail died while receiving treatment at the District Headquarters Hospital on Thursday. The deceased has been identified as 55-year-old Raghunath Sahu, a resident of Badahinsa village under Jarapada police limits.
Raghunath, along with his son Manas Ranjan Sahu, had been incarcerated in Angul Jail since April 2023 in connection with a murder case. According to reports, Raghunath, who had a history of high blood pressure, suddenly fell seriously ill on Monday evening. Jail authorities informed his family that he was being transferred to the District Headquarters Hospital for treatment. However, by the time his family arrived at the hospital, he had already passed away.
The grieving family has raised concerns about alleged medical negligence, claiming that Raghunath was not provided with regular medication during his time in prison, which they believe led to his untimely death. “We have asked for bail on multiple occasions, as my father’s health was deteriorating. But every time we were denied. My father died due to medical negligence. I demand a thorough investigation,” said Bidulata Sahu, the deceased’s daughter.
As of now, the jail administration has not issued any official statement regarding the incident. Further inquiries are expected as the family seeks justice and answers to the circumstances surrounding Raghunath’s death.
