Koraput, June 4: In a shocking incident, five critically ill patients died within hours late Tuesday night at Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital in Koraput, allegedly after being administered the wrong injection by hospital staff.
According to reports, the deceased hailed from different regions of south Odisha, including Koraput, Borigumma, Semiliguda, Malkangiri, and Kalahandi. All were admitted to the hospital’s ICU and surgical wards for post-operative care and critical monitoring.
Three of the patients were in the ICU, while the other two were in general surgery beds. Family members of the deceased claim the hospital staff administered a second round of injections shortly before the patients' conditions deteriorated rapidly, and they passed away.
Relatives have accused the hospital of gross negligence. They allege that the patients were stable post-surgery, and it was the second dose administered within a short interval that caused sudden complications. Many suspect the injections were either wrongly prescribed or improperly dosed.
Police reached the scene and deployed personnel on the premises to prevent any outbreak of violence. Authorities have taken custody of the bodies and sent them for post-mortem examinations to determine the exact cause of death.
Despite the seriousness of the incident, hospital authorities have not issued an official statement.
