Bhubaneswar, Nov 18: The Government Railway Police (GRP) at Bhubaneswar Railway Station successfully apprehended a notorious mobile snatcher, Amit Kumar Barik, on Monday with the help of advanced face-scan technology.

Barik, a known figure in several snatching incidents across Bhubaneswar and surrounding districts, was spotted during a joint patrol conducted by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and GRP near the station's lift area.

According to Ashok Kumar Gochhayat, Inspector-in-Charge of Bhubaneswar GRP Police Station, “During our routine patrol, we noticed a man acting suspiciously. We approached him for questioning. At first, he denied any wrongdoing, but later identified himself as Amit Barik.”

Gochhayat further explained that the GRP employed a multi-biometric face scanner to cross-check Barik’s identity. The system, which matches facial features with criminal records, confirmed his involvement in multiple previous theft and snatching cases.

After his arrest, the GRP recovered more than four stolen mobile phones from Barik’s possession.

Authorities are now investigating further to determine if Barik is connected to additional snatching and theft incidents in the city and surrounding areas.
