Rs 9000 crore investment to produce electric and engine vehicles

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has officially inaugurated the massive new Tata Motors and Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) manufacturing facility today. Located in the SIPCOT complex at Panapakkam in Ranipet district, this facility marks a significant milestone in India's automotive history.

Development of this greenfield project comes with a staggering investment of Rs 9,000 crore (USD 994 million). This state-of-the-art plant is designed to manufacture both traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and modern electric vehicles (EVs). This dual capability highlights the Tata Motors JLR plant as a pivotal player in the future mobility ecosystem of the country.

TRB Rajaa, the Minister for Industries, Investment Promotions, and Commerce, emphasized the economic impact of this launch. Speaking earlier in the day, he noted that the facility is set to generate 5,000 direct jobs. However, the economic ripple effect is expected to be much larger.

"I see at least 5,000 jobs, 5,000 direct jobs being created. And then what is more important for me and my Chief Minister is the ancillary units that are going to come around JLR itself. It's going to be phenomenal," Minister Rajaa stated.

Construction of the plant was completed in record time, showcasing excellent collaboration between the Tata Group and the state government regarding regulatory clearances and execution. Minister Rajaa described Tamil Nadu as a manufacturing powerhouse, noting that this project aligns perfectly with the state's goal of fostering distributed growth across various districts, rather than just centering development in one city.

Recruitment for the facility has been inclusive, drawing workforce talent from across the state. Specific focus was placed on local skill development initiatives. The Minister highlighted that many young men and women working at the plant were sourced through the 'Naan Mudhalvan' Skill Development Corporation.

Looking toward the future, the government has indicated that this is only the beginning. The current operations represent just phase one of a larger developmental plan. With the upcoming "Convergence Conclave," further expansions and investments are anticipated, promising that more vehicles will soon roll out from this industrial hub.
