Three killed in elephant attack in Odisha's Dhenkanal

Dhenkanal, July 31: At least three people were killed after an elephant attacked them at in Baghadharia village under Hindol police limits in Odisha's Dhenkanal district this morning.

The deceased have been identified as Jhulana Dehuri (55), her brother-in-law Karunakar Dehuri (60), and a villager named Sashi Sahu.

According to reports, the tragic incident occurred while Jhulana was picking flowers near her home. Out of nowhere, a wild elephant appeared and attacked her. 

Upon hearing her screams, her brother-in-law, Karunakar jumped to her rescue but was also attacked by the elephant. Both of them tragically died on the spot.

Soon after, another villager, Sashi Sahu, encountered the elephant and was badly injured in the attack. He was quickly taken to the Angul District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) by locals where doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival. 

The incident sparked outrage and fear among the community, with residents accusing the authorities of failing to take action despite frequent elephant intrusions in the area.

In the wake of the deaths, angry villagers carried the bodies to the Cuttack-Sambalpur road near Satmile Chhak, about 3 km from the village, and staged a roadblock. They demanded compensation for the victims' families and called for the urgent installation of solar-powered fences to prevent future elephant intrusions.

Upon getting the information, SDPO Satya Kumar Nanda, Hindol IIC Charulata Behera, and Forest Ranger Gautam Pradhan arrived at the scene and pacified the agitating villagers.
