Tamil Nadu to get major infrastructure push as PM Modi launches projects worth ₹13,000 crore

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate infrastructure projects and lay the foundation stones for several development initiatives worth over ₹13,000 crore in Tamil Nadu on Sunday. The projects cover metro rail, highways, railways, ports, petroleum infrastructure and scientific research.

Chennai (Tamil Nadu), Oct 11: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate infrastructure projects and lay the foundation stones for several development initiatives worth over ₹13,000 crore in Tamil Nadu on Sunday. The projects cover metro rail, highways, railways, ports, petroleum infrastructure and scientific research.

According to an official release, Modi will travel on the Chennai Metro from Porur Bypass Station to Poonamallee Bypass Station and back at around 11:30 am. He will then offer prayers at the Jalakandeswarar Temple and visit the Brain Centre at IIT Madras.

At around 1:30 pm, the Prime Minister will inaugurate projects, dedicate completed initiatives to the nation and lay foundation stones for new projects. He will later attend the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Jaigopal Garodia Hindu Vidyalaya Matriculation Higher Secondary School at around 3 pm.

Metro and highway projects

Modi will inaugurate the Poonamallee-Vadapalani stretch of Phase II of the Chennai Metro Rail Project, built at a cost of around ₹4,900 crore. The corridor features a 3.7-km double-decker structure and advanced signalling systems designed to support driverless operations. It is expected to improve connectivity between Chennai's western suburbs and the city centre while reducing travel time.

The Prime Minister will also inaugurate and lay foundation stones for National Highway projects worth around ₹3,700 crore. These include the 36-km, four-laned Vadugapatti-Therkuvenganallur section of NH-744 and the 30-km, four-laned Madurai Ring Road section of NH-744A.

He will also lay the foundation stone for the four-lane Thiruvarur Bypass on the Nagapattinam-Thanjavur section of NH-83. The projects aim to ease congestion, improve road safety and strengthen connectivity to important commercial, industrial and pilgrimage centres.

Railway and port infrastructure

Railway projects worth over ₹750 crore will also be dedicated to the nation. These include the Karaikal-Peralam railway line and three rail flyovers in Coimbatore and nearby areas. The flyovers are expected to reduce waiting time at busy level crossings and improve road safety.

Modi will also inaugurate five redeveloped Amrit stations at Palani, Vellore Cantonment, Ambasamudram, Paramakkudi and Namakkal under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.

Several port-related projects will be launched to expand cargo-handling capacity and improve logistics. At Chennai Port, the Prime Minister will inaugurate a paved storage yard, four export-import godowns, an upgraded cruise terminal and a Seafarers Club.

At V.O. Chidambaranar Port, he will inaugurate and lay the foundation stones for eight development projects focused on cargo and container capacity, cleaner maritime energy and improved cargo evacuation.

He will also inaugurate the Coal Berth-3 project at Kamarajar Port and lay the foundation stone for capital dredging works for Container Terminal Phase-I, Stage-II.

Petroleum and scientific research initiatives

The Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone for a Group II/III Lube Oil Base Stocks project at Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited's existing Manali Refinery. The project will cost around ₹1,620 crore and have a capacity of 270 thousand metric tonnes per annum. It aims to produce high-quality base stocks for premium lubricants in India.

Modi will also dedicate the Sudha Gopalakrishnan Brain Centre at IIT Madras to the nation. He will launch a scientific mission to map more than 100 human brains into three-dimensional atlases at cellular resolution, covering stages from foetal development to old age

He will also release C-STROKE, a human ischaemic stroke atlas featuring over 1,000 annotated microscopic sections from a stroke-affected brain. The atlas is expected to help researchers identify new therapeutic targets.

The visit will conclude with the Prime Minister's participation in the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Jaigopal Garodia Hindu Vidyalaya, marking 50 years of the school's contribution to education in Chennai. (With ANI inputs)
