Tamil Nadu ammonia leak: Death toll of Odia workers rises to 15

Bhubaneswar, July 5: The death toll among Odia workers following an ammonia gas leak at a seafood processing unit in Tamil Nadu has climbed to 15 after another injured worker died while undergoing treatment.

The latest victim has been identified as Rohini Juang (23), a resident of Rebana village under the Harichandanpur area of Keonjhar district. She had remained hospitalized since the incident and succumbed to her injuries during treatment.

Sources said that four to five other injured workers continue to receive medical care.

The tragic incident took place on June 21 at a private seafood processing and export facility in Kannigaipair village near Periyapalayam in Tamil Nadu's Tiruvallur district.

At the time of the accident, around 120 migrant workers from Odisha, Assam, and Jharkhand were on duty when ammonia gas leaked inside the factory. The workers were exposed to the toxic fumes, resulting in breathing difficulties, dizziness, and severe eye irritation. Many collapsed inside the premises and were immediately shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment.
